Lamb Shwarma at GG, Seminyak

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Today I woke up with a bad flu, so my hubby and I took it easy. After breakfast we just hung out at our villa where I updated my blog. When the time came for lunch, we all went out together to a place nearby, just at the corner of Jln. Kayu Jati called GG (Grocer and Grind).

The restaurant was quite posh, it had an indoor and outdoor dining area. But even the indoor dining area felt a bit outdoor-ish since they opened all of its full size windows which was very nice for a sunny day. We took a place in the corner and ordered our light meal. (more…)

Dining Out: North Korean Restaurant

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Yesterday was the birthday of two of my colleagues. They both decided to take all office staff out for lunch, and since one of them comes from North Korea, we went to a North Korean restaurant, which I think is called Pyongyang, but I’m not entirely sure.

The restaurant, which is located in Gandaria area, was not very impressive in terms of atmosphere. It looked very much like a normal residence, only with many dining tables. It was quite interesting (and odd) to see that they actually recruited or brought waitresses all the way from North Korea (or so it seems, from their appearance and the language in which they spoke with my colleague). They did not speak English (or so it seems, because whenever my friends and I spoke in English to them, they did not react), but to my surprise they did speak some Indonesian. The male waiters, however, were all Indonesian (which somehow added to the oddness).Pyongyang

In terms of food… well it was not bad although I wouldn’t go there again. Don’t get me wrong, I do like Korean food (although before this dining experience I only tasted South Korean food), but I found that there just wasn’t anything particularly special that would make me come back for more. At least not to this restaurant, because if I wanted to have some Korean food, there are plenty other Korean restaurants in areas closer to the office or home, which I may add, has much better atmosphere. Pictured here are the food served: some fried vegetables (similar to tempura), stir-fried bean sprouts, tofu in chilli sauce, kimchi, deep fried calamari (which someone claimed to be chicken and I therefore took one and instantly regretted it), and some unidentified gum-like sweets that tasted similar like mochi (an Indonesian snack made of corn-flour and will usually have sweet beans in it).

Lunch Today: Mie Ayam (the Real Deal)

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Image046 Remember in my recent post I wrote about the mie ayam that I cooked myself? In that post, I said that the real deal, being the mie ayam kampung will always be the best.

Today I craved for the real deal, so one of the office drivers brought to me (and my next desk colleague) the real deal which was bought from a small street vendor located in our other office at Wisma Aldiron. This time I ordered the yamin version, which means it is not served in broth but mixed with vegetable oil and sweet soya sauce.

No words can really describe how delicious it tastes. ;) You just have to try it yourself! :D

Lunch Today: Soto Ayam

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Today I am back to the office in Jakarta. I arrived last night very late, at almost midnight due to the slight delay of the flight (when is it ever not delayed?). The office boy who usually makes a round to take lunch order was out groceries shopping today for office supplies. Therefore, my colleague and I ordered some food from one of the drivers who happened to be out of the office anyway. Image045

My colleague ordered grilled chicken and I opted for soto ayam. Soto ayam is a (chicken) soup with a mix of different ingredients, depending on the type of soto. This one, a clear soto or soto bening, consists of glass noodles, chopped white cabbage, tomato slices and of course shredded chicken. The soup is usually made of the chicken broth, spiced up with some galangal, spring onions, lemon grass, onion, garlic, some ginger and coriander. Personally I like the Batavia version, soto Betawi, which has uses similar spices, minus the coriander, plus candle nuts, turmeric and coconut milk. But this soto was not bad at all! :D

My Sister’s Birthday Lunch

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

It is my sister’s birthday today so my hubby and I wanted to take her and our parents out for lunch. We originally wanted to go to Cafe Wien, an Austrian cafe located in Plaza Semanggi because my sis wanted to have apfel strudel. Unfortunately it turned out that they have closed and now in replacement of it stands the fast food joint Burger King.

Image038 So we walked around a little looking for an alternative, but since we didn’t want to risk choosing a restaurant that we had no idea about, we ended up in Solaria restaurant which is almost always reliable to have decent tasting food.

My dad and hubby opted for chicken cordon bleu while my sister opted for chicken mozzarella. I chose a more Asian taste, and picked chicken katsu with noodles in teriyaki sauce. Mine turned out to be the best choices, because apparently the two other chicken menu did not taste much. The chicken was well-seasoned, and then of course the noodles took on the taste of the teriyaki sauce. It was served with a small bowl of broth.

Of course since it was an Indonesian restaurant, they did not serve any apfel strudel so my sis will just have to wait for the next opportunity. :P
